Welcome to Moray
The Perfect Place to Call Home
An Idyllic location to live, work, rest and play.
Are you looking for a beautiful, peaceful, and affordable place to live? Look no further than Moray. Located on the coast of the Moray Firth and stretching to the Cairngorms, Moray offers a perfect blend of stunning landscapes, rich history, and a friendly community. And, as an additional bonus, housing here is the most affordable in Scotland, making it an attractive choice for families and professionals alike.
Planning for the Future
Dr Gray’s Hospital is one of Scotland’s most beloved healthcare facilities and provides local and much-valued services to the people of Moray.
So that it can continue and build upon its rich legacy, a ten-year plan has been developed for the future of Dr Gray’s Hospital.
In February 2023, the NHS Grampian Board approved the Strategic Intent for Dr Gray’s Hospital as part of the health board’s Plan for the Future.
Staff and members of the public who contributed to the development of this ambitious plan are enthusiastic about the hospital’s role as what we are calling an “anchor” organisation in the Moray area. This means the hospital will play a key role in the community in the future. In healthcare, of course, but also in providing employment, opportunity and as a centre of innovation and learning.
Substantial new investment in clinical and managerial capacity is already underway, with more to come.
A key feature of the overall strategy is the development of a networked approach. Bringing in support from across the North of Scotland – to help ensure the sustainability of local services.
This will include clinical pathways that can be shared across board boundaries, such as developing surgical specialities and maternity services.
Our teams are playing a key role in developing this new way of working that we truly believe is the way forward for healthcare in the future.
Community engagement
As part of the development of the plan, more than 3,000 people had their say. This included staff, the public and a variety of partner organisations across Moray on what is important to them, what works well and what could be improved.
So, we know the plan is what people want and we’d love for you to help us make it happen.
As one of the northernmost and smallest district general hospitals in Scotland, we have a geographical opportunity with Dr Gray’s to deliver something truly innovative.
Teams have long-established training links with colleagues and Universities in Inverness, Aberdeen and across the Highlands and Islands. With many colleagues having experience of working in the different locations already.
There are many professional benefits for people in our team by working more closely together.
Dr Gray’s Hospital has a strong heritage for training. We are redoubling those efforts to help attract the best and brightest to Moray’s flagship healthcare facility.
A full assessment of the space, quality and function of the site has also been completed. This work is informing the improvements and changes needed to the building now, as well as where investment will be prioritised in the future.

Existing services will be enhanced and new services developed in Dr Gray’s Hospital – ensuring as many women as possible receive the majority of care throughout pregnancy, birth and beyond closer to home, supported by a network of clinicians.
This includes:
- Pre-operative anaesthetic assessments
- The expansion of Day Assessment and Triage facilities covering scheduled and unscheduled care needs
- Combined specialist clinics for women with medical comorbidities such as diabetes, cardiac disease, blood disorders
- The introduction of non-invasive fetal medicine clinics supported by trained sonographers and specialist obstetricians
- Additional sonography capacity from scanning midwives
- Specialist clinics supported by dedicated specialist midwives to enhance care for women with complex care needs
Moray Maternity Service Plan
NHS Grampian is working jointly with colleagues across NHS Highland on the ambitious and exciting Moray Maternity Services Plan.
An additional £10 million of investment has been made already but, there is no doubt, the success of this relies very much on the networked North of Scotland approach.
We’d love for you to play a key part in the teams working together to deliver local services for women and families.
